Directors

Image of Michael Jenkinson

Michael is co-Director of the North West Surgical Trials Centre and the Sir John Fisher Foundation / RCSEng Chair of Surgical Trials at the University of Liverpool. He qualified from the University of Liverpool in 1998. He undertook neurosurgery training at The Walton Centre, Liverpool between 2001 and 2010. His clinical practice is in neurosurgical oncology. His research interests include; meningioma and cerebral metastases, and clinical studies on quality of life in brain tumours. He is the chief investigator for several NIHR funded neurosurgery and neuro-oncology trials.


Image of Cliona Kirwan

Cliona is co-Director of the North West Surgical Trials Centre and the Masonic Charitable Foundation / RCSEng Chair of Surgical Trials at the University of Manchester. She qualified from Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School in 1994. She undertook her basic surgical skills training in London, South Africa, Poole and Bristol and her PhD at the University of Manchester. Her specialist surgical training and her National Oncoplastic Fellowship at the North West Deanery. Her clinical practice is in surgical oncology and oncoplastic breast surgery. Her work is split equally between clinical work and academia. Her research interests include translational and clinical research into the symbiotic relationship between cancer and coagulation, breast cancer de-escalation and treatment trials and surgical trials in general, including device trials. She is the chief investigator for the TIP Trial, the CHAMPion study, the WisDen study and national surgical lead for PRIMETIME, LORIS and POETIC-A.


Image of Emma Coyle

Emma is a Surgical Trials Research Co-ordinator for North West Surgical Trial Centre (NWSTC) and is based at The University of Liverpool. Emma supports Prof Jenkinson on all administrative matters including but not limited to website, communications and engagement and training events.

Emma also supports the facilitation of development of new surgical trials.

Emma has worked for The University of Liverpool since 2017, which involved high level administration within the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, planning high level events, development and maintenance of the honorary database system and communications and marketing on a research programme. Emma has also worked at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine for over five years as a personal assistant/senior administrator.


Image of Nazina Arafin

Naz is a Surgical Trials Research Co-ordinator for North West Surgical Trial Centre (NWSTC) and is based at The University of Manchester. Naz supports Professor Cliona Kirwan on all administrative tasks, including providing PA support, arranging engagement, and training events and developing collaborations to facilitate the development of new surgical trial ideas.

Naz has experience of delivering clinical trials since 2016 in various institutions such as The University of Salford, The University of Birmingham, and Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.

Paula Ghaneh - Director of NWSTC 2013-2021

Paula Ghaneh is a Professor of Surgery in the Department of Molecular and Clinical Cancer Medicine, University of Liverpool. Her research interests are in pancreatic diseases and clinical trials. Paula is the Chief Investigator of the ESPAC 5F and ESPAC 4 – Ampullary Clinical Trials, as well as Chair of CRUK (Clinical Research Monitoring Panel).


Carrol Gamble - Director of LCTC, Professor of Statistics

Carrol Gamble is Head of the Department of Biostatistics and the Director of the Liverpool Clinical Trials Centre. Carrol is a statistician with extensive experience in the design, conduct and analysis of clinical trials. Carrol has particular interests in methodological research around recruitment and retention of clinical trial participants; consent models in emergency care clinical trials; and trials involving children and young people.


Chris Sutton - Senior Lecturer in Clinical Trial Stats, Deputy Director (Methodology) and Lead Statistician for Manchester CTU

Chris Sutton is Deputy Director (Methodology) and Lead Statistician for Manchester CTU. He has an interest in improving health through improving trials and collaborates widely on complex trials in various disciplines, with specific interest in the topics of stroke, musculoskeletal and mental health.
